This day is celebrated every year across the world to raise awareness about the house sparrow and other common birds affected by the environment. Nature Forever Society (NFS) in India launched an international initiative to celebrate World Sparrow Day.

The house sparrow evolved alongside humans, being known to live only in close contact with us rather than in the wild. For years, it has lived with us peacefully in our buildings and gardens, but over the past two decades, their populations have been declining in almost every city.
